Here is where it stops being free. Call number 26 costs $3.00. At 50 calls you are paying $75. At 100 you have moved to a paid plan. And on the free tier you are still renting an answering service that sits in front of your number — not a line with your voice on it.

That is the whole argument. Not "Smith.ai is bad." It is: the moment you get busy, per-call billing starts charging you for the thing you wanted.

What Smith.ai actually charges

Two details that matter more than the headline price. Add-ons bill per call on top: appointment booking $1.50, accepting payments $1.00, text and email follow-up $0.50 (Source: smith.ai/pricing/receptionists, fetched 17 July 2026). And spam counts: "Every call answered by your AI Receptionist counts toward your call quota by default," with an allowance to strike up to 10% of calls from the bill each cycle (Source: smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist, fetched 17 July 2026).

None of this is hidden. Smith.ai publishes all of it. The problem is not honesty, it is the incentive: per-call billing means your best month is your most expensive month.

What your calls actually cost

This table assumes you are on the cheapest Smith.ai plan for your volume — not that you sit on a small plan bleeding overages. That is the comparison most "alternatives" pages get wrong, and it is the one that flatters Smith.ai most.

Smith.ai staffs real people. On the human plans a person answers, follows your script, and handles intake. On the AI plans, complex calls can transfer to a live North America-based receptionist. For the contractor taking 100 calls a month, the question is simply whether a human is worth $915 against $29.99.

What it costs a team, honestly

Worth being precise here: Beside's $4.99 is an extra phone number, not an extra seat. Each user is $29.99 and already includes one line (Source: beside.com/pricing, 17 July 2026).

So a 10-agent brokerage is 10 × $29.99 = $299.90/mo. On annual it is $199.99 per user per year — $1,999.90 for the team, about $166.66 a month.
