An AI receptionist picks up your salon's phone while your hands are busy, asks what the caller needs, and writes it up for you. Beside answers on your existing number for $199.99 a year, and books to a calendar you connect rather than into Vagaro or Booksy.

We answer phones for a lot of businesses where nobody is free to pick up, and salons are their own case. A plumber can pull over. A stylist has both hands in a head of foils and a client paying for that hour, watching her decide whether to answer.

Every buyer's guide for this leaves that out. Answering has a cost, and somebody in the room is paying it.

The call you can't take

The promise worth buying is a line you never have to touch during a service, that still keeps the caller.

What makes it hard in a salon is that the cost of picking up is immediate and visible. The client in the chair booked that hour. She can see you weighing her against whoever is calling, and she will remember which way you went.

Some salons solve it the blunt way.

"We didn't publish a phone number for almost two years… it was impossible for us to take calls and service our clients." — Allester Thomas, owner-operator, Loc'd And Braided, Brooklyn

An eight-stylist salon's answer to the phone problem was to delete the phone. Their booking still runs through Mangomint (Source: Loc'd And Braided, 2026), which is not a Beside integration, and the line runs on Beside. They put the number back.

Start with what it will not do

Almost every competing page for this search promises the same thing: our AI writes into your salon software. Beside does not. There is no Vagaro, Boulevard, GlossGenius, Booksy, Fresha, Meevo, Mindbody or Mangomint integration on our integrations page, in any form (Source: Beside integrations, 2026), and we would rather say so here than have you find out in week two.

Some booking platforms now bundle their own call answering, which is worth knowing before you buy anything. A receptionist that ships inside your booking software writes straight into that software's book, which is a real advantage. It also stops the day you change platforms, and it answers on a number the platform controls.

The other way round is to own the line. Your number is yours, ported or forwarded, and it keeps answering whether you are on Vagaro this year and Mangomint the next, or on a paper book. That is the trade.

Beside works the other side of that. It answers on your number, asks the caller what they want, qualifies them, and puts the appointment on a calendar you connect to the app. Loc'd And Braided keeps its book in Mangomint and puts Beside on the line, and the two never speak to each other.

The list runs to about seventeen names, Zapier among them, which bridges to a thousand-odd apps besides. No salon platform is on it.

So if you run Vagaro or GlossGenius, the sequence that works is: keep the platform exactly as it is, connect the calendar you actually look at each morning, and let the phone layer feed it. You will move a booking across by hand sometimes. That is the honest trade, and it is a smaller one than losing the call.

The five calls a salon actually gets

Everyone selling you an answering service treats the phone as one stream to be captured. It is five different calls, and they deserve opposite treatment.

The callWhat she's really askingWho should take it
Regular client moving Thursdaycan you fit me Saturday insteadThe AI takes it, you confirm against the book
New client pricing colorwhat is this going to cost meThe AI takes the details. You quote it, after you've seen the hair
New client, first appointmentdo you do hair like mineThe AI takes it and asks the qualifying questions
Walk-in, right nowis there a chair free in ten minutesThe AI answers your hours honestly and takes the callback, rather than promising a chair it cannot see
Product rep, robocall, scamnothing you wantThe AI absorbs it. You never hear it

That last row gets worse the better your marketing works. Put your number in a Google or Instagram ad and you have published it to everyone, not just to clients.

"The best thing I loved is she's handling those scam calls, scammers can't go through to me." — Tyna Atabaeva, PodivaNYC, a solo nail tech in New York

Tyna put her Beside number on the ads and kept her own line clean. Anything billed by the minute counts those calls as minutes like any other.

The one call no machine should take

Row two is the one to be careful about, and it is where we part company with most of this category.

A color price is not a lookup. It is a judgement about hair you have not seen, described by someone who does not know what is already on it, how many sessions it will really take, or what shape the ends are in. Quote $120 on the phone and produce a $280 bill at the chair, and you have not won a booking. You have lost an afternoon and a client, and probably a review.

An AI that confidently prices color over the phone is selling you a problem. The right behavior is smaller: take the inquiry, ask the questions that matter, and get you a name, a number and a callback window so the person who will do the hair sets the price. That is what Beside is set up to do here, and it is deliberately less than the rest of this category promises.

What actually happens to the call

It answers instantly with no hold music, learns your business, asks, qualifies, and keeps you informed. Every call is transcribed and summarized, with suggested actions and calendar events, and the day closes with a recap.

Two details matter more in a salon than the feature list suggests. The greeting can differ inside and outside opening hours, which is the difference between a closed Monday sounding shut and sounding dead. And it works in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, which in plenty of shops is not a nice-to-have.

So the Sunday night call about hair for a wedding on Saturday gets picked up, asked the right questions and written down, and it is sitting in your recap on Tuesday morning with a name and a number attached, instead of being a voicemail you half-remember.

Confirmation texts to the client are available as a setting you switch on. They are not automatic, and anyone telling you otherwise has not read the settings.

"At the end of the day it gives us a summary… it took away a lot of the anxiety." — Allester Thomas, Loc'd And Braided

Metered pricing has a particular problem in a salon: it taxes you hardest in the months you were trying to grow.

What it costs, against a number you already know

You know your own figure better than any industry report does. Take the service you would have put in the empty two o'clock. Say a color is $180 at your chair; use whatever yours actually is.

Beside is $199.99 for the year, or $29.99 a month (Source: Beside pricing, 2026). That one $180 color, booked instead of missed, is very nearly the whole cost of the year.

The two o'clock is the point. A plumber can do the job at seven in the evening instead. A chair-hour is gone at 2:01 and it does not come back, so the call that went unanswered at eleven leaves a hole in a fixed day.

Getting it on your line this week

  1. Start the trial and sort the number. Port yours across or forward the one you have. Beside runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, and the trial starts from the App Store listing.
  2. Give it the business: your services, your hours, what you take and what you don't.
  3. Set the after-hours greeting so a closed Monday still sounds open for business.
  4. Connect the calendar you want appointments landing on.
  5. Settle your own color rule before you go live: no price over the phone, a callback the same day. The AI's job is to bring you the inquiry, not to close it.
  6. Put the Beside number on your ads and listings first, the way Tyna did, and let it eat the scam calls before it touches anything else.

Step five is the one people skip, and it is the one that decides whether you trust the thing by Friday.

We covered the booking mechanics separately in how a call turns into a booked appointment; what Beside does on a call covers the rest, and how AI receptionists compare across small businesses covers the field.

We're also building something new for businesses that want more of the back-and-forth handled end to end, and we're opening access soon. You can join the waitlist.
