An answering service for painters picks up while you're on a ladder and turns the caller into a scheduled walk-through instead of a message slip. Beside is a business phone line with an AI receptionist that answers, figures out what the job is, and books the estimate.

We build the phone line a lot of one-person trades run their business on, so we spend our days on this exact problem: the call that arrives while both your hands are busy.

The call you can't take

You're ten feet up with cut-in tape laid along the ceiling line and a loaded brush in your hand. Your phone is in the truck, and it rings for twenty seconds and stops. By the time you're down and washed up there's a missed call from a number you don't recognize and no voicemail.

That call wasn't an emergency. Painting doesn't have emergencies, which is why the pages selling 24/7 crisis cover were written for somebody else's trade. It was a homeowner in a hallway they've decided to repaint, with three painters' numbers open, working down the list. They'll have booked one of you by Thursday.

Michael Chudner tunes and repairs pianos across New York City on his own. His hands and his attention are inside somebody's instrument the same way a painter's are inside somebody's hallway, and he describes the same ending: when he can't break off to answer, the caller works down the list until somebody picks up.

What one missed estimate is worth

Painting is a quoted, high-ticket sale, which changes the math on a missed call. A small job (an accent wall, doors, a set of cabinets) runs $400 to $1,200. Interior work from a room up to a whole floor runs $1,000 to $2,900. Exteriors run $1,800 to $4,200 (Source: HomeAdvisor, 2026).

JobWhat it's worthWhat that job pays for
Accent wall, doors, cabinets$400 to $1,200Two years of the subscription
Interior, a room to a whole floor$1,000 to $2,900Five years of it
Exterior$1,800 to $4,200Nine years

The job values are HomeAdvisor's (Source: HomeAdvisor, 2026). The multiples are our arithmetic against the annual price at the low end of each range, not anybody's research: one $400 cabinet job covers the year twice over. Voicemail is where a painting estimate quietly becomes somebody else's job.

What has to happen between “hello” and “Thursday at four”

The call only pays when it turns into a walk-through on a date. Four things have to happen first:

  • Pick up inside a few rings, before the caller moves to the next name
  • Get the scope: interior or exterior, how many rooms, when they want it done
  • Put it on a date
  • Follow up in writing so it doesn't get forgotten by dinner

Beside does all four on the call. It answers, asks what's involved, qualifies the lead, books the appointment and drafts the follow-up (Source: Beside pricing, 2026).

The booking stays in Beside, with the transcript and summary of the call it came from. There's no Google Calendar or Calendly integration listed today (Source: Beside integrations, 2026), so Thursday at four shows up in Beside itself: the App Store listing describes the app generating summaries with suggested actions and calendar events. Zapier is the bridge if you want it elsewhere.

The one question an answering service can't answer

The first thing a painting caller asks is what it'll cost, and it's the one question nobody can answer without standing in the room. That's the real reason painters distrust this category: they picture a stranger quoting a number that turns into an argument on site.

Open your recent calls and count the unknown numbers from last week that left no voicemail. That is the list this is about. The call's job is to get the work described and a time on the calendar. The number gets decided when you're standing in the room, and Beside generates and sends the quote once you have something real to put in it (Source: Beside, 2026).

The other thing owners want to know is whether the caller can tell. Some will. It answers in a clone of your own voice and greets people by name where it has it, which is what closes most of the gap, and you don't have to take our word for it: forward your line during the trial and call your own number from the truck.

What it costs to have somebody answer

A human virtual receptionist service starts around $250 a month for 50 minutes, and climbs to $395 for 100 minutes and $720 for 200 (Source: live vendor pricing page, 2026). A per-call service starts at $300 a month for 30 calls, with $11.50 for every call over that (Source: live vendor pricing page, 2026). Beside is $199.99 per user/year (Source: Beside pricing, 2026).

Fifty minutes is not many estimate calls. A homeowner who wants to walk three rooms and talk about color runs long, and that is the caller worth having, so the one you most want on the phone is the one who eats the bucket fastest or costs you an extra $11.50.

Run the entry human plan's list monthly rate out to a year and it's $3,000 for fifty minutes a month, fifteen times Beside's annual price. That's our arithmetic on their published rates. Month to month, without committing to a year, Beside is $29.99.

Pick on shape, not on price. A human service if you want a person on the phone and you don't mind buying minutes by the month. A flat line if the call you keep missing is the one that turns into an estimate.

Dave Diaz runs a four-person plumbing crew in Los Angeles on the same setup, capturing three to five real prospects a day (DSM Rooter, Beside customer story).

It lets me work on the business instead of just in it. I'm not buried in calls anymore, I'm building DSM. — — Dave Diaz, DSM Rooter plumbing, Los Angeles

Exterior season, and the months the phone wins

The problem isn't flat across the year. July puts you outside on a house from seven in the morning with the sprayer running, and July is when the exterior calls come in. Saturday evening is the other stretch nobody staffs, and it is when a homeowner decides the deck is getting done and opens three painters in three tabs.

That isn't a problem you fix by trying harder. It's the same weeks doing both jobs, and the second one always loses.

If your jobs live in Jobber or Housecall Pro

Plenty of painters run scheduling and invoicing on a field-service platform. There's no native Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan or JobNimbus integration in Beside today (Source: Beside integrations, 2026).

Here's what happens instead. The call, the transcript, the summary and the booked walk-through live in Beside, and you move the job across when you write the estimate up, which is after the walk-through anyway. Zapier is the connection for anything in between: 17 direct integrations including HubSpot, Salesforce, Follow Up Boss and QuickBooks, (Source: Beside integrations, 2026), plus Zapier reaching 1,000+ apps (Source: Beside pricing, 2026).

Putting it on your line this week

  1. Forward your existing number first. Nothing changes on the truck, the yard signs, or the invoices with that number on them.
  2. Tell it what you actually do. Interior, exterior, cabinets, decks, the neighborhoods you'll drive to. It can read your website and train itself on what's there.
  3. Let it take the calls you were already missing. The ones during the cut-in, the ones after six, the ones on Saturday.
  4. Read the daily recap once, at the end of the day, and call back the ones worth calling.

Porting the number comes later. You can forward, keep your number, and stop forwarding whenever you like. For a trade whose phone number is painted on the side of the van, that matters more than any feature on the list.

Not ready yet? The pricing page has the plans, and Michael Chudner's story is the shortest version of how this runs for a one-person trade.
