A locksmith answering service picks up lockout calls you can't take mid-job. The catch is who the caller hears: a state consumer-protection alert now teaches customers that an out-of-state call center is a locksmith-scam signal. Beside answers on your own ported number, in your cloned voice, for $199.99 a year.

Why the person locked out at 11pm already suspects whoever answers

We answer calls for small businesses all day, and locksmithing is the one trade where the answer itself is under suspicion before anybody speaks. In July 2026 the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection published guidance on locksmith fraud that describes the operation by its phone system: fraudulent companies run "multiple phone numbers direct to one call center that are often out of state or out of the country" (Source: Connecticut DCP, 2026).

The advice it gives consumers is specific. Check whether the number is local or an out-of-state area code. Ask for a full price up front, including travel. And if the person on the phone cannot give an exact address for the business, hang up.

"If the person over the phone cannot provide an exact address, hang up." — Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, July 2026

For a locksmith, that guidance is worth reading as a specification. Your customer has been handed a checklist for spotting a fake: is the number local, will they give a full price, can they name the address. Behind that checklist is an operation the state describes as numbers routed into one out-of-state call center, which is the product most of this search result is selling you.

What that means for the answer on your line

Two things have to stay true, or the answer costs you the job it just picked up. The call has to land on your number rather than a routed one, and the voice has to be yours. Beside is built that way: number porting and call forwarding keep the line your customers already dial, and voice cloning means the greeting is you.

From there it does the work of a good dispatcher. It answers instantly with no hold music, figures out what the caller needs, scores and routes the lead, and transcribes and summarizes the calls it handles, so the address arrives in writing instead of on a message slip (Source: beside.com). The app runs 4.8 out of 5 from 8.9K ratings (Source: App Store).

One thing it should not do on an emergency call is name a price. Beside publishes quote generation, and publishes no rule for how a number is set or capped mid-call, so on a lockout the job to hand it is qualification and capture: the address, the vehicle, the lock, a callback number. You price the job once you know what you are driving to. On this trade that restraint is the whole point, because a phone quote that does not survive the drive is the behavior the state alert is about.

It is a self-training agent that learns your business, and every call it takes comes back as a transcript. The check to run in your first week is to read what it actually said to a lockout caller.

On software, there is no Workiz, ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro integration today. The section below covers what to do about that.

The callback is not a backup plan

The plan every solo locksmith runs is to catch up between jobs. It fails for a reason that has nothing to do with how fast you are. The numbers above come from a survey of 1,556 US adults, and they describe your caller rather than you: an unrecognized number now reads as a probable scam before it reads as a callback, and most people have screened out a legitimate one that way.

Now put your callback into that. You are dialing a stranded stranger twenty minutes later, from a cell that is not the number they called, in the one trade the state warned them about this year. The demand is still on the phone: 55% of consumers say they would rather have a call than a message in genuinely urgent circumstances, the survey's example being a natural disaster (Source: TransUnion, 2024). It is on the phone at the moment it rings, though, and voicemail is where lockout jobs go to die.

What should reach you after a lockout call

You already know what a lockout call has to establish. The question is what reaches you afterwards, because a message that says "call about a lockout" costs you the drive. This is the shape of a summary worth having:

  • The exact address, and whether the caller is standing at it
  • Car, house or commercial, because that is three different vans' worth of gear
  • Vehicle year, make and model, and whether they still have a fob. Standard key fitting averaged $88 in 2024, a transponder $127, and ignition rekeying $210 (Source: Locksmith Ledger, 2024)
  • Locked out, rekey, broken key extraction or a lock change
  • Whether they can show the vehicle or property is theirs
  • A callback number that is not the phone locked inside the car

That is the whole test for anything you put on your line: does it come back with those filled in, or does it come back with a name and a number. Taking a message is a different job, and it is not the one worth paying for.

What one after-hours call is actually worth

The trade publishes its own price survey every year, and it settles the argument better than any vendor's math.

What the trade charged2024 national average
Service call fee$94
Regular-hours labor$104/hour
After-hours labor$151/hour
Standard key fitting$88
Transponder key fitting$127
Ignition lock rekeying$210

Those averages come from the trade's own annual survey (Source: Locksmith Ledger, 2024). Two numbers in it do the work. After-hours labor pays about 45% more an hour than regular hours, and the service call adds $94 before anyone turns a pick. A single one-hour night job is therefore worth roughly $245, by our arithmetic on those averages.

One $245 after-hours call covers a full year of Beside at $199.99. That is one line, billed annually, with additional lines at $4.99 a month (Source: beside.com/pricing).

Human answering services are a real option for a shop with somebody at a desk. If a person sits there all day and knows your jobs, a message service works fine. If nobody does, a service metered by the minute taxes you for being busy on the exact nights your labor is worth $151 an hour.

Does it work with the software you run jobs in?

Beside has no native integration with Workiz, ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro today, and any page that tells you otherwise is guessing. What it does connect to is HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Zoho, Follow Up Boss, Attio, Notion, Slack, Google Sheets, Google Contacts, QuickBooks and Square, plus Zapier reaching 1,000+ apps (Source: beside.com/integrations).

If you run your jobs in Workiz today

The practical setup is to leave the job software exactly where it is. The line answers, you get a written transcript and a contact for the calls it takes, and you open the job in Workiz the way you already do. If you want the record to land somewhere by itself, Zapier will push each call summary into a Google Sheet or your CRM, and that takes about ten minutes to wire up once.

A security company with the same phone problem

Gregory Bacciano runs GAB Security in Brooklyn. Twenty guards, every one of them in the field, and nobody sitting at a desk to catch the phone. That last part is the locksmith's problem exactly.

"I've lost plenty of business because I wasn't able to get to the call… you move on to the next person." — — Gregory Bacciano, GAB Security LLC

Since putting Beside on the line he has picked up three new repeat customers and about three hours of his day back: read the full story.

The same after-hours pattern runs a towing line, and shops handling automotive keys hit it from the other side. We also broke down what answering services actually cost across the trades, and what emergency plumbing lines pay for coverage.
