Housecall Pro answers phones through two of its own products: CSR AI, an AI that takes calls and books jobs, and HCP Assist, staffed by live agents. Both are sold on top of your plan, and neither publishes a price. Beside is a separate business line that answers for $16.67 per user a month.

We answer calls for small service businesses all day. Owners ask us this one when the phone in their pocket has started costing them jobs.

Does Housecall Pro answer your phone for you?

Yes, in two different ways, and most pages you will read blur them together.

CSR AI is the AI one. Housecall Pro says it "answers calls, chats, and books jobs 24/7," and positions it as continuous coverage "at a fraction of the cost of an office admin" (Source: Housecall Pro, CSR AI). It runs inside the account you already have, so the job it books lands where the rest of your jobs live.

HCP Assist is the human one. Calls are "answered live by trained agents" who "book jobs straight onto your Housecall Pro calendar," and you pick the hours you want covered: weekdays, weekends, or around the clock (Source: Housecall Pro, HCP Assist).

Both work. What an owner still needs is what they cost and who they were built for, and only one of those has an answer he can look up.

What the answering layer costs on top of your plan

Housecall Pro publishes its plan prices to the dollar. Basic is $59 a month, Essentials $149, Max $299 on annual billing, with a 14-day trial (Source: Housecall Pro pricing). You can read all of that at nine at night with a coffee in your hand.

Now try to price the answering. On the CSR AI page, the phone product carries one line about money: "CSR AI sold separately." The AI Team page draws the same border from the other side. Marketing AI, Analyst AI, Coach AI, Help AI and the chat half of CSR AI "are always on and included in Housecall Pro for all plans" (Source: Housecall Pro, AI Team). Four AI products come free with every tier.

The one that picks up the phone is the one you have to ask about, and HCP Assist publishes no price either. That is not a trick, and we are not going to pretend it is. It is a sales motion built for a shop big enough to have a conversation about call volume. If you are one guy with a van, that conversation is itself the cost. You wanted a number tonight, and getting one means booking a call about booking calls.

Whether that matters depends on which shop you are. If a dispatcher would otherwise be typing that job in, their add-on is the right buy. If your cell is the business line, you are shopping for something else: a phone that gets answered.

Who each one is actually for

That split is worth spelling out, because it decides the purchase. Housecall Pro's own answering products earn their money when the job is already in the system before your dispatcher looks at it. We would rather say that plainly than sell you something that fits worse.

This article is for the other shop. One truck, maybe two, cheapest plan, business phone is the cell in his pocket. He is not losing money to retyping. He is losing it at 6:40 in the evening with his hands under somebody's sink, and the call never becomes a job in any system at all.

What happens to the job if Beside answers and Housecall Pro isn't connected

Beside does not integrate with Housecall Pro, and we are not going to hint at a roadmap. Beside's integrations page names seventeen tools, including QuickBooks, Google Contacts, Slack, HubSpot and Follow Up Boss. Housecall Pro is not one of them.

What happens instead is ordinary. The call gets answered rather than ringing out. Beside picks up, works out what the caller needs, schedules the appointment, and writes the call up as a summary with the next action attached. You finish the job you were on already knowing who called, what broke, and when they are booked. Moving that into Housecall Pro is a step you do yourself.

The other thing owners want to know is what the caller hears. Beside answers instantly with no hold music, greets people by name when it can, and transfers the call to you when the person on the line wants a human. Nobody sits in a queue waiting to find out which they are getting.

Size that against your own week. At three to five calls a day it is a short task you do with the app already open. At thirty calls a day landing on a dispatcher's screen it is a real tax, and you should buy their add-on instead of ours. That line falls roughly where you hire the person who answers the phone.

The 6:40pm call, priced

A water heater lets go on a Tuesday evening. The homeowner starts working down the search results, because that is what people do when there is water on the floor. Your line rings out because you are still on a job across town.

The job that got away was worth $340 on the national average, in a $182 to $500 range. Evening work bills above the day rate: most trades charge time and a half to triple the hourly rate depending on when the call comes in, and a flat emergency trip fee can run $300 to $400 at the high end (Source: HomeAdvisor, 2026). The after-hours call is the most valuable one on your line and the one most likely to go unanswered.

That job is gone whatever the hour. The ones that come in after six are the expensive ones to lose, and they are the ones nobody is there to answer.

A plumbing shop that bought the line, not the integration

Dave Diaz runs DSM Rooter & Plumbing in Los Angeles, four people, three years in the trade. He works under sinks and in crawl spaces, so the phone rang out for the same reason yours does.

He runs three to five qualified prospects a day now with the spam filtered out, and reaches urgent callers back inside the hour instead of after the job. He did not connect anything to a field-service platform to get there. He pointed his number at a line that answers, which is the whole of the change on offer here. The app carries 4.8 stars from about 9,000 ratings (Source: App Store).

Which one should you use

If this is youWhat to use
Crews, a dispatcher, thirty calls a dayHousecall Pro's own answering add-on, so the job is in the system before anyone looks
One or two trucks, your cell is the business lineBeside, so the phone gets answered at all
You want the price before the conversationBeside publishes it; Housecall Pro's answering products do not
The job must land in Housecall Pro automaticallyHousecall Pro's own products. Beside will not do this, and its integrations page does not list one

Decide which problem you actually have. If somebody already picks up during business hours and the only pain is data entry, keep your money and turn on theirs. If the phone rings out and the job dies there, the paperwork was never the problem. Beside publishes three ways to start: forward the number you already give out, transfer it to Beside entirely, or take a new number in your own area code.

We ran the same check on the same question for Jobber and on ServiceTitan phone answering. For the trade, there is answering service for plumbers; for the money, what AI answering actually costs; for the mechanics, how Beside's AI receptionist works.
